At last, the Main Team have made it out of Kathmandu. We arrived
at the airport at 0830 this morning and waited around for what seemed
like an eternity when we were suddenly beckoned through to the Departures
Gate. In no time we were taxiing and were in the air. The weather
was extremely hazy this morning and the airline manager told us
that conditions were marginal but he had given us his best pilot.
After about 35 minutes in the air we started losing height and we
then skimmed across the brown ridge lines, which seemed close enough
to touch. When the undercarriage went down, we all heaved a sigh
of relief and in no time we were bouncing along the grass strip
at Tumlingtar. After a quick cup of tea and a light lunch we were
then piled into a very dubious looking van with our bags and a couple
of local lads clung onto the roof and we were driven to Mani Bhanjyang
where we have now set up camp to spend our first night. We have
now reached the end of the road, literally, and will continue the
rest of our journey to Base Camp on foot.
As I write this update I am surrounded by about 25 local children
who are showing great interest in our laptop computer and solar
charging kit!
