Another exceptionally frustrating day that still sees us sat in
Kathmandu. After last night's fantastic Jazz Concert, featuring
the exceptional Lewi Banks' Brotherhood and Sonia (Michael Parkinson
if you're reading this get them on your show) we rose early this
morning and headed back to the colourful mayhem of the Airport Domestic
Departures Terminal.
After the obligatory 3 hour wait, we eventually boarded our "Cosmic
Air" flight to Tumlingtar with some trepidation. After a quick
sweety from the Air Hostess and some cotton wool for our ears we
were soon bouncing around the taxi way, then lined up with the runway
and got airborne. We climbed through the haze and headed East across
brown terraced ridges intersected by deep gorges. The flight was
not the smoothest we had experienced and our Dornier 228 was buffetted
about by the turbulence.
About half an hour into our journey, we were informed that the winds
at Tumlingtar were too strong for us to land and we watched in disappointment
as the compass needle swung back 180 degress and we headed back
to Kathmandu. To the North we were given a tantalizing glimpse of
the snow covered peaks of The Himalayas in the distance. It was
a sombre team who once again boarded the bus and headed back to
The Summit Hotel; there is no Jazz Festival tonight!
The expedition leader discussed the options with Kit Spencer from
Summit Trekking, particularly the option of making the journey by
road. Unfortunately this is not an option as the journey would take
a minimum of 3 days. Several phonecalls to the airline operator
were made in an attempt to bring tomorrows scheduled flight forward
in order to maximise our chances of reaching Tumlingtar. We will
now leave the hotel at 0815 with a promised departure time of 0930.
We await tomorrow's attempt with baited breath.
