We woke at 6 this morning and after breakfast spent time sorting
out loads to be carried to the ice fall. We all carried loads
of between 15 and 20 kg over quite harsh and steep ground. From
Base Camp, we followed the moraine for about 1 km then we climbed
steeply to the top of a ridge. Once we crested the ridge, we dropped
steeply down to the base of the ice fall.
As well as dropping climbing stores off at the foot of the ice
fall, we established an Advance Base Camp close by. This means
that the team working on the ice fall will not have to make a
trudge of an hour and a half at the beginning and end of each
day. Tomorrow, Ian Venables and Dave Bunting will start work pushing
the route through the ice fall and they will be supported by Dick
Gale and Sherpa Pema. The remainder of us will continue to ferry
kit to Advance Base Camp.
As I write this we are engulfed in a snow storm!
