SUMMARY OF ACTIVITY BY TEAM
|
| A frosty start with temperatures below freezing meant
that there was no hesitation in getting moving as all team members
were feeling the sudden change in temperature. A brisk ascent from
the overnight stop lead us in to the sunshine and spectacular but
hazy views. From here we descended through bamboo forest with the
majestic form of Mera Peak dominating the landscape. In seven days
time we will have trekked round three sides of this mountain and
will hopefully be making our attempt on the summit. Several small
tea houses were encountered on the way enabling the team to enjoy
a cup of chiya (milky tea). As we headed towards the river, the
flora changed from stunted shrubs to mature pine, birch, bamboo
and yet more rhododendrons. Another excellent lunch was enjoyed
but there was no time to relax as a cold wind kept the temperature
down. The route continued along the river bed where we picked our
way through boulders- the aftermath of a catastrophic flood caused
by a lake bursting it's banks a few years ago and ripping a massive
gouge through the valley. We reached the Sherpa hamlet of Kurke
as snow started to fall. As I write this at 1700 local time the
snow is settling and tomorrows programme may be in jeopardy. Due
to the last few days overcast conditions we have had no opportunity
to re-charge our batteries. Therefore, we are minimising use of
the laptop and for this reason today's report will not include any
pictures.
