SUMMARY OF ACTIVITY BY TEAM
|
| Today we managed to have a lie in of fifteen minutes
(until 0615!) due to today's trek being only 4-5 hours - albeit
all uphill! We were woken by our cookboys with bed tea before heading
in to the teahouse for porridge and chappatis. Unfortunately Sam
Gleave was still feeling under the weather from a bout of tonsillitis
which started in Kathmandu. Rather than expose him to the higher
altitudes of today's trek the decision was made that he would rest
at Pangkongma for the next 1-2 days until he is strong enough to
continue and catch us up. Sean Banning has stayed behind with him
along with 3 of our local staff. We remain in daily contact with
them by satellite phone and are optimistic that they will rejoin
us soon.
In our slightly reduced numbers we continued on the trek . Fifteen
minutes above the village we arrived at the local Gompa (monastery)
where we were warmly welcomed by the Lama who invited us in to
see the idol of the Guru Nangsi (lady teacher). We were lucky
enough to be given a rendition on the sanain
(horn) and drum played by the Lama and our Sirdar, Nima! From
here conversation was minimal due to a steep climb through the
jungle up to the Pangkongma La at 3173m, passing through some
varied and colourful Spring flora. On reaching the La (pass) we
headed north along an undulating ridge still encased in fantastic
magnolia, rhododendron trees and carpeted with mountain primroses.
The route was not an easy choice for the porters, many wearing
flip flops, as the rocky track was tricky in places. Half way
along the ridge we were treated to our first view of Mara Peak
- our warm up for Barents. There was much excitement and photo-taking
until someone pointed out that we were only at half the height
of Mera and still had a long way to go! Eventually we arrived
at our first wild campsite, snuggled into a col. Due to the limited
real estate at this site we could only find room to pitch two
of our tents so instead of three per tent we now have five - very
cosy! The campsite affords stupendous views across both the Hinku
Valley to the east and the Dudh Kosi to the west. Looking at the
ridge ahead of us, tomorrow promises to be challenging!
