SUMMARY OF ACTIVITY BY TEAM
At last we are off! After years of planning and preparation it is good to be on the trail heading towards the mountain – albeit in a rather circuitous route. The flight into the mountain airstrip at Lukla was as exciting as ever and would rival any Disneyworld rollercoaster ride! At Lukla we reorganised some kit whilst Nima Sherpa our Sirdar (Head Sherpa) hired 25 local porters to carry our trek equipment for the ten day march around to Mera Peak – our first climbing objective. Although Lukla and Poyan are at about the same altitude the first day provided some good acclimatisation due to the 600m descent almost to the valley floor of the Dudh Kosi, followed by a steep climb back up the hill. The scenery on the walk was colourful with rhododendron and magnolias in full bloom. Our campsite is in a small village and we immediately attracted the attention of the local children fascinated with the satellite dish and laptop. A number of the team have made enthusiastic attempts to start learning Nepali and judging by their performance so far should be fluent by the time we get back to Kathmandu. Tomorrow we start to climb in earnest as we head to Pangkongma and will no doubt begin to feel the effects of altitude.
