EXPEDITION DIARY

DIARY UPDATE FOR:

Tuesday 23rd March 2004

The four man Advance Party have been in Kathmandu for almost one week. The largest task was to reorganise and repack equipment and food to ensure that the correct equipment for either team is transported via road / helicopter to the appropriate road head / Base Camp. This has been necessiated by a change to the original plan. To reduce the overall 'footprint' of the expedition, it has been decided that the HADT will reverse their original plan ie. fly to Lukla and use Mera peak as aclimatisation before moving on to Baruntse and tackling the mountain via the West Col.

Lt Col Martin Price RM posting the daily Advance Party report to the expedition leaders from the Summit Hotel, Kathmandu

In addition the Advance Party have been finalising details (such as permits to use radios) with the various Nepali Ministries that insist on inspecting and listing the all of the expeditions' equipment.

The e-mail and Satellite communications systems have been thoroughly tested - indeed this report has been compilied from within the Hotel and transmitted using the NSSL supplied INMARSAT Mini-M terminal whose antenna we have been able to place on the roof!

In summary everything is ready for the arrival of the remainder of the teams tomorrow and we are all very much looking forward to getting out into the hills.
