SUMMARY OF ACTIVITY BY TEAM
|
A leisurely start to the day after last nights impromptu
party. For many of the team it was their first experience of Sherpa
dancing, singing and chang - the local rice wine - and much fun
was had by all. We suspect the subtleties of 'Old MacDonald's Farm
and the Hokey Cokey' went over our hosts heads but they appreciated
the actions! At nearly 5000m Sherpa dancing should be considered
a key component of any acclimatisation training.
It was the sound of primuses humming in the cook tent and the call
of "tea ready" that woke us this morning closely followed
by a rendition of "Happy Birthday" sung for our leader,
Andrew, who is 44 today. After breakfast and some camp chores we
donned our big mountain boots for a walk up a nearby ridge. We reached
a point at 5200m and were able to see much of our route up Mera
peak clearly as well as get a little more altitude under our belts
which will hopefully stand us in good stead for our climbs.
The afternoon was spent preparing equipment to be used on the snow
on both Mera and Baruntse peaks. This also included a discussion
and demonstration by the team leader on the use of a PAC (Portable
Altitude Chamber) bag. This can be used as an aid in the treatment
of certain high altitude conditions.
The evening's meal was rounded off with the presentation of a stunning
birthday cake for Andrew.
