SUMMARY OF ACTIVITY BY TEAM
|
Breakfast was interrupted by an impressive avalanche
high above the camp from the upper slopes of Kang Taiga. The resultant
snow cloud spread across the whole cwm and covered our tracks from
yesterday! Because today's trek was relatively short we were able
to enjoy a more leisurely start and did not leave Tangnag until
0830. The route climbed steeply from the valley floor and followed
the lateral moraines of the Dig glacier. At the halfway point we
came across a lonely 'tea house' nestling beneath the imposing face
of Mera North peak. To our surprise the sahuni (female shopkeeper)
was the same person who owned the tea house that we had used at
Tangnag. She had raced ahead of us to take full commercial advantage
of our party by providing a full range of refreshments! Not wanting
to disappoint, we all had a cup of dudh chiya (milk tea).
On arrival at Khare the weather resumed it's predictable pattern
of clouding over with increased wind speed and light flurries of
snow. The afternoon was spent sorting through our high altitude
equipment in preparation for our ascent of Mera Peak. After an excellent
evening meal in the mess tent we were entertained by some Sherpa
dancing and music.
